Any suggestions for romantic getaways not too far from New York City?

There is a great little book written by Susan Clemett and Gena Vandestienne called "Heavenly Weekends - Travel Without a Car: 52 daytrips, overnight & weekend getaways near New York." Enjoy.

A couple of places, one we went to years ago which was lovely, called the Niew Country Loft, 41 Alhusen Road, New Paltz, 255-6533. They have a room that is loft-like with a fireplace and complimentary cordials that was very romantic. Another place I'm told is romantic and beautiful is the Inn on Green River in Hillsdale, NY: www.innatgreenriver.com.

We enjoyed the Meadowlark Inn in West Brattleboro (3 hours and 15 minutes away). Proprietors are two women who went to culinary school in Massachusetts. It's an old farm house. It's not a luxury B&B but it is in a nice setting in VT. You'd want to be sure to ask for one of the bigger rooms (e.g., Mapleview); the Morningside room has a very small bathing area with sink in the room.

There is also a huge inn in the Berkshires, the Red Lion Inn. Much closer - 2 hours something. Big restaurant in the Inn, towns nearby with other (good) restaurants, e.g., in Great Barrington.

My husband and I are heading to Ithaca in 3 weeks for a romantic getaway. We have also loved Friends Lake Inn in the Adirondacks.

Sparrow Hawk B&B

I love the Sagamore Hotel in Lake George, ~3-4 hrs from NY.

In Litchfield, CT (2 hours): The Mayflower or The Boulders. The Boulders is cheaper, but both are nice.

In Lenox, Massachusetts, the Wheatly - nice, but expensive.

I would recommend the Tarrytown Estate Inn in Tarrytown. Price includes breakfast. Very scenic and good restaurants nearby. We went to the Tarrytown Castle for dinner. Also, would recommend Kykuit Estate, Rockefeller's estate. The estate has beautiful grounds, art, etc. Make reservation for tour ahead of time. Enjoy. Best of all, under 1 hour drive.

There's always the Mohonk Mountain House or, honestly, I have always found the Hamptons off-season (Montauk especially) to be lovely, but I love the beach in winter...

Buttermilk Falls Inn and Spa in Milton, New York, near New Paltz. It was really scrumptous, down to the last detail and within easy driving to charming towns.

Don’t know how you vacation budget-wise – but if you two every want to go to a really romantic and wonderful place, but will drive a few extra hours, try the Inn at Little Washington. Nothing can be said to describe the place!
